It was like the Euros all over again in Donnybrook last night as the Irish crowds welcomed our American friends with a rousing version of ‘Shoes off for the Boys in Green’.

In fact, it was more like the Euros in more ways in one as just like the Irish soccer team in Poland, the team wearing green in the High School American Football game last night, St. Norbert, were getting a kicking on the pitch but still received rousing support from the stands.

With not much to get excited about on the pitch as Norbert fell to a fairly comprehensive 40-3 defeat to John Carroll University, the Irish element in the audience sought alternative methods of amusing themselves and launched into a rousing version of a song that has been adopted as a sort of unofficial anthem by Irish soccer supporters, particularly during the Euro odyssey a few months back.

Who knows, we might even hear it again at the Aviva this afternoon, but with some 50,000 more fans expected in Lansdowne Road than were in Donnybrook last night, it is more likely that cries such as ‘Go Irish’ and ‘Beat Notre Daaaaame’ will be the ones most often heard.

Check out the Donnybrook version of ‘Shoes off for the Boys in Green’ for yourself in the video above.
