Do you have friends or family living in the EU? Well you may be glad to hear that you’ll be able to call them for less in the not too distant future.
From December 2015, the extra roaming charges associated with calling someone in a different EU country will be abolished, meaning you’ll be able to call your friend Pierre in Paris for the same price as calling your auntie Mary in Mayo. It is especially brilliant news for Irish phone users, as it will hopefully mean that there will be no more roaming charges for people who are travelling the length and breadth of the island of Ireland, regardless of what county they happen to be in.
The European Parliament voted in the measure today after years of negotiations with the various mobile phone companies operating across Europe.
Speaking about the decision, European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes said, “Nearly all of us depend on mobile and internet connections as part of our daily lives. We should know what we are buying, we should not be ripped-off, and we should have the opportunity to change our mind.
“Companies should have the chance to serve all of us, and this regulation makes it easier for them to do that. It’s win-win”, she added.
The agreement is expected to be finalised later this year.
