Got stuff on Megaupload? You might not by Thursday!

31/01/2012 9:40 am

US federal prosecutors are continuing to find new ways of wrecking everyone's buzz. From Thursday, Megaupload user's data could begin to be wiped from the Hong Kong-based servers. The sever companies hosting Megaupload data are no longer getting paid and may start freeing deleting content.

The site, which was taken down three weeks ago, is still offline with no access for members to their data. That could be very bad news for anyone hosting files on the site. At least 50 million Megaupload users have data in danger of being erased.

Megaupload founder and all-round bad boy, Kim Schmitz, says he won't be able to defend himself if all the files are wiped before his trial in the US.

The company's lawyers, who are already massively overworked, say some user's took the unusual move of not using the site for pirated content. Some have even stored their own data, including photos and personal documents.

The US authorities have already copied some of the data from the servers to use in its prosecution of the Megaupload bosses.
