Twitter taking censorship requests from politicians

31/01/2012 2:35 pm

Twitter's now taking requests from everyone from Korean dictators to Barack Obama. The micro blogging site's CEO has said it wants to transparently handle government requests for removal of content.

Dick Costolo said he wants the company's new content policy, which will see certain content blocked by geographical location, to be open and transparent. But, surely that's not possible when you're blocking content that national governments don't like.

The CEO tried to reassure Twitter users by saying the new policy did not mean they were actively monitoring tweets themselves. No, they're just allowing politicians to censor what they don't like.

Twitter established itself as a tool for rebels during the Arab Spring revolutions across North Africa and the Middle East last year. Now, it seems the company could be moving to curtail its power and potency.

Costolo said Twitter would only block Tweets nationally upon a request by government. And it would be left up for the rest of the world. Looks like the Chinese might get warm up to Twitter now that they know it'll be easier to censor.
