Wi-Fi has been tested on a number of Dublin Bus routes for the past couple of months but it's set to be rolled out on 80 new busses by the end of the year.
Do you ever find your 3G internet access giving up whenever you drive through certain parts of the city? If so, you’ll know how annoying it is having to wait for your webpage to load (first world problems, I know) but thankfully that won’t be an issue for a number of Dublin Bus routes in the not too distant future.
Around 80 new advanced double-decker busses have been kitted out with Wi-Fi access and high tech CCTV systems – so there’s no going on any dirty websites, ya hear? The new fleet will be gradually rolled out over the coming months but you’ve probably already seen one or two rolling around town.
The new buses will operate on routes 1, 4, 7, 29a, 33, 102, 104 and 151 and they will feature free Wi-Fi, central doors, CCTV cameras, seating for 68 passengers and standing space for 11 passengers.
Apparently, Wi-Fi on public transport could become commonplace here in Ireland if Leo Varadkar is to be believed. He recently told Silicon Republic that free Wi-Fi would be available on almost all public transport services by 2013.
It will certainly make the journey in and out of work that little bit more tolerable.
