VIDEO: The stunning first GAA 360 video puts you right in the middle of the Dubs on Hill 16

Conor Heneghan

Welcome to the future, son.

The advent of 360° video has been one of most exciting developments in digital in recent times. The best usages give the user the opportunity to be totally immersed in their surroundings and the results can be mind-blowingly good.

For Dublin GAA fans, a hot summer’s afternoon on the Hill surrounded by a sea of blue is part of the ritual. For the rest of us, unwilling to commit the ultimate sacrilege of donning the sky blue jersey and standing amongst the faithful, that experience has been out of reach.

Until now.

This first GAA 360° video tells the story of what it means to support the Dubs in their All-Ireland quarter-final victory over Donegal, through the eyes of former Dublin Footballer and Ballymun Kickhams star, Alan Hubbard.

The video has been created by AIB as part of its summer ‘Club Fuels County’ campaign. As the video plays, your surroundings come alive as fans are transported to Croke Park, fully immersed in the game day action happening all around them.

Viewers can explore every angle and move around within the video by turning their device or moving the cursor on screen.

Here is it on Facebook (mobile creates the best viewing experience):

YouTube: In your browser type in the following address po.st/clubfuelscounty. This will prompt you to open in the YouTube app.

Google Cardboard: If using the Google Cardboard, in your browser type in the following address po.st/clubfuelscounty. This will prompt you to open in the YouTube app. Once the video begins playing you will notice a Google Cardboard glasses icon in the bottom right hand corner of the video. Select this, pop your mobile device into your cardboard viewer and hit play.

Wearing headphones is highly recommended.

We got to experience the 360° video for ourselves down at Facebook’s international headquarters in Dublin and can testify that is a unique and fully immersive experience.

One minute, you’re in the middle of a cacophony of noise on Hill 16 and the next, you’re bracing yourself for a hefty shoulder as Ballymun Kickhams players swarm around you in the middle of an intensive training session.

Nothing beats being there, but this really is the next best thing.
