Cork named as one of Europe’s best cities

It’s something residents of the city have long been aware of, but a new survey has revealed that Cork is one of the top ten European cities to visit.

While city-breaks might usually entail a trip to London, Paris, Rome or Amsterdam, none of that quartet have made it into Europe’s top ten cities as compiled in a logarithmic survey by search engine giant Yahoo!

Cork, however, has made the cut, which is sure to offer a further boost to the already lofty opinion Corkonians have of the capital of their own “People’s Republic”.

The list – in which capital cities are conspicuous largely by their absence – also includes Antwerp, Valencia, Munich, Rotterdam, St Petersburg, Edinburgh, Gothenburg, Lyon and Thessalonika.

There may well be some science involved in cobbling together Yahoo!’s apparently entirely arbitrary list, for which the book ‘1000 Great Holiday Ideas’ seems to have been the source.

Cork is described as a city with a “burgeoning arts, culture and restaurant scene [and] an invigorating mixture of cramped 17th-Century alleyways, snug old pubs, top cuisine and modern architectural masterpieces.”
