What do Irish people want from their holidays? Apparently we’re all mad for a bit of Clare…the county that is…
Where is the best place for landmarks in Ireland? No, no, it isn’t Dublin or Cork. The answer might actually surprise you. It’s Clare (of all places). Honestly. We couldn’t believe it either.
GrabOne Escapes, a new website offering affordable breaks at home or abroad, conducted a survey to see what Irish people actually want from their holiday. Apparently, we’re all mad for a bit of Clare. I know, who would’ve though it? We’re obviously very easily pleased.
So what do we like so much about Clare? Well it’s home to the country’s favourite landmarks. The Burren and the Cliffs of Moher. Yes, it turns out rather than just being a vague nightmare left over from Leaving Cert Geography, the Burren has nestled its way into our hearts to become our favourite sightseeing destination. Alongside the Cliffs of Moher.
The most popular types of breaks for Irish people are beach and city breaks at home and abroad, with more than half of all the people surveyed naming these as their holiday of choice.
When it comes to staycations, Galway is the place to be with 40 per cent of the people surveyed ranking it as number one for a weekend away. It was closely followed by Kerry, with 38 per cent of us happy to travel there for a weekend instead.
But what about when we take our pasty Irish skin abroad? According to GrabOne, 99.5 per cent of us travel abroad looking for sunshine and Spain is the most popular foreign destination for Irish people.
So we look like milk bottles on the beach, we go from pasty to severely burnt in the space of five minutes and when we are abroad, we complain about the taste of everything. Example: “This tea doesn’t taste like Irish tea. The bread here isn’t like the bread you get at home….” But yes, despite all that, we all love to take some kind of break every six months or so.
But seriously…Clare? Really?
Finally 99 per cent of those surveyed said they would try somewhere new if they were getting more than 50 per cent off the normal asking price, because we’ll go anywhere as long as it’s a good deal.
GrabOne Escapes is based on the deals website GrabOne.ie which has saved Irish consumers over €6million in less than a year. So if you feel like a holiday any time soon, you should probably have a look here.
