Most people meant it as a joke, but it seems that some Americans also thought that it wasn’t just Independence Day yesterday, but America’s 2013th birthday as well.
Irish people, like people of other nations, aren’t slow to indulge in some Yank-bashing every now and again and while we can be a bit harsh on the folks Stateside at times, sometimes they don’t help themselves by providing material that’s nigh-on impossible not to poke fun at.
Such an opportunity arose yesterday when, as they do every July 4, Americans celebrated Independence Day, marking the famous day in 1776 when the United States declared independence from Great Britain.
That fact was lost on some Americans, however, who believe that the country has existed for over two millennia and that yesterday marked the country’s 2013
th birthday. Now, we know that some people who posted tweets about it being America’s 2013
th birthday were merely taking the p*ss, but quite a few, it seems, genuinely believed it as well.
