An Irish-American murderer on death row told his executioner 'pog mo thoin' prior to being killed.
It’s a phrase that a lot of us use when we’re p*ssed off with someone on holidays, but it comes as a bit of a surprise to hear that an American death row inmate’s last words were as Gaeilge.
Before being strapped up to the electric chair at the Greensville Correctional Centre in Virginia, Robert Charles Gleason Jr (42) uttered the final phrase, ‘kiss my arse’ in his ancestor’s native tongue.
According to the Irish Independent, Gleason is “the first condemned prisoner on death row in Virginia to choose electrocution over lethal injection since 2010.”
He was serving life for a separate murder when he murdered his 63-year-old mentally ill cellmate, so officials decided the only thing left was the death penalty.
According to reports, Gleason wasn’t afraid of his execution and said it was ‘karma’.
