A fisherman who thought he was reeling in the catch of a life-time had, in fact, been trawling in a scuba diver - by his tackle!
Life-long fisherman John Goldfinch, 61, was fishing with his mates at a beach in Devon, England when he thought it all was going swimmingly as he felt a bite.
However, disappointment ensued after his prized catch surfaced to reveal a helpless pain-stricken scuba diver. To make matters worse, it was hook, line and sinker for the poor chap as he was hooked out by his genitals.
Mr Goldfinch, of Exmouth, told the Telegraph, “My mates were falling about laughing. I said 'sorry mate, I didn't see you there' and he just said it was very murky down there.
“The funniest thing was that his girlfriend then surfaced, helped him remove my tackle from his… tackle, and nonchalantly handed the hook back to me and apologised."
Despite seeing the funny side of the freak incident he said there was a serious message to be taken on board.
“I didn't see the diver because he didn’t have a safety buoy, which they’re supposed to have when they’re moving underwater," said Mr Goldfinch.
“My brother-in-law's a diver and he said it served the bloke right - at the end of the day he could have ruined his kit or even worse."
“One of my friends was on his first fishing trip and he asked if it happened very often - I told him it was a once in a lifetime thing," he said.
Well at least John will be able to top any other fisherman’s tail, unlike the diver who’s going to be left a little limp for the next few days.
