Buying the first present for your first girlfriend

Buying the first present for your first girlfriend is one of the most daunting prospects for an adolescent male. What does she like? Will she like it? If the lads find out will I be slaughtered?

These are three very important questions and the first is probably the trickiest to figure out. A teenage guy is no different to a man of any age category and it can be a simple process to figure out what she would like.

“Well she likes getting dressed up, going out, etc.” is usually the main thought. Given you can’t dress yourself, never mind an equally self-conscious teenage girl, clothes and shoes are ruled out quicker than you can say ‘half price at Zara’.

Jewellery was reluctantly ruled out as it seemed daunting and a trip into the unknown. Something like a PANDORA bracelet was not as well known then as it is now. The male youths of Ireland don't know how lucky they are.

A PANDORA bracelet would have made life much simpler

You weigh up your options and think make-up and perfume may be possible options. You think she may be a bit of a ‘plasterer’ when it comes to make-up anyway, so buying more of this may not have such aesthetically pleasing consequences. Settled, perfume it was.

The next step is to walk around a pharmacy looking utterly helpless and lost. Luckily for the sales assistants, this is par for the course. “Can I help you Sir?” the attractive woman asks. Clearly her boyfriend went for the make-up approach.

Once you mumble the words that you are looking for perfume, the assistant is sharp enough to realise you are not shopping for your mother and is only too eager to lend a hand. After underselling my budget – even as a teenager, you have a fair idea what sales people are like – she convinces you that for another tenner, Ralph Lauren Blue will have her more pleased. In your own mind that is understatement of the century.

That is almost everything taken care of, but probably the biggest hurdle to negotiate is the inevitable questioning/slagging from your mates. Of course you are not going to spend too much on her, sure that would be…well I won’t repeat, but let’s just say that in their eyes that would make you more interested in the same sex rather than the opposite. Very insightful at that age.

It was pretty much a yes to everything. It was hard to think of what to go for, she did enjoy it and yes, the slagging was unmerciful, but good memories looking back on it.

All we have learned is that jewellery is the safest option and when it comes to keeping everyone happy, a PANDORA bracelet is romantic and hassle free. And those are the two most important factors in any present.
