Excellent first entry for GAA Picture of the Year 2013
The GAA season threw-in today as the McGrath Cup began in Kerry. And it served up one cracking pic.
It might be only January 5 but competitive (ish) GAA began today with the McGrath Cup in Munster.
The pre-season cobweb clearer began with a local derby of sorts between Kerry and IT Tralee at Fitzgerald Stadium. The game was significant for a few reasons. Firstly it was Eamonn Fitzmaurice's first match at the helm of the Kingdom and as it was the first inter-county action since the death of Paidi O’Se, the flags at the Killarney venue flew at half mast.
As a game it was no contest. Kerry led 3-09 to 0-04 at half-time and the final score was as emphatic as it comes, 4-22 to 0-10.
Kerry’s Paul Geaney netted twice while Mike Geaney and Patrick Curtin also raised green flags but the one bum note for Fitzmaurice was the departure of Kieran Donaghy with an injury 13 minutes from the end.
But before he departed the Austin Stacks man was snapped in the first contender for GAA Picture of the Year 2013.
Captured by Lorraine O'Sullivan of INPHO it shows the Kerry star stretch his enormous frame but still miss out on fielding the ball to Tralee’s Damien Somers.
Ah, it’s great to have the GAA back all the same, isn’t it?
