Billy Ray Harris was begging in his usual spot in Kansas City when a passer-by, Sarah Darling, took some coins from her purse and dropped them into the man’s cup. Unfortunately for her, she had taken her engagement ring off earlier in the day and placed it in her purse, and this went in with the coins also.

Realising her mistake the following day, she frantically went back to Billy Ray in the hope he still had the ring, and luck was on her side.

“It seemed like a miracle,” Miss Darling said. “I thought for sure there was no way I would get it back.”

She gave Billy Ray all the money in her purse, while her fiancée set up a website seeking donations for the homeless man, which currently stands at more than $145,000.

“I think in our world we often jump to like the worst conclusion, and it just makes you realise that there are good people out there,” she said.

As for Billy Ray himself, he says the reason he returned the ring was because of his religious upbringing.

“My grandfather was a reverend. He raised me from the time I was six months old and thank the good Lord, it’s a blessing, but I do still have some character,” he said.

A story that has worked out well for all concerned.
