JOE's transfer wrap: Alex, Samba and a man called Modeste
Big barrelling central defenders dominate the transfer talk on a day where there’s nary an Irish-related rumour in sight.

Big barrelling central defenders dominate the transfer talk on a day where there’s nary an Irish-related rumour in sight.

The biggest stories and seemingly the ones with even the slightest degree of credibility in them revolve around Chelsea, with one central defender heading out the exit door and holding it open just in time to allow Gary Cahill complete his super slow-motion move from Bolton Wanderers.

Cahill was due in London to complete a medical last night, and he’ll have the job of filling the rather sizeable hole vacated by Brazilian defender Alex, who is on his way to QPR after the Blues accepted a £3.5 million move from Mark Hughes’ new outfit.

With opportunities becoming increasingly limited, he's a smart Alex to leave Chelsea

Speaking of central defenders, the ears of Arsenal fans are bound to be pricked by the news that Christopher Samba didn’t move to any beat at Blackburn training yesterday, having failed to show up entirely as he seeks a move away from the fowl atmosphere at Ewood Park.

QPR are also interested, leading to the possibility that Hughes could have one of the most intimidating and goal-hungry centre-half partnerships on his hands.

While Samba is a larger than life character, the same accusation could not be levelled at Rovers’ transfer target, Bordeaux’s Anthony Modeste, who, we can only assume, works hard, keeps his head down and is always eager to deflect credit away from himself and onto his teammates.

Despite Alex Ferguson’s repeated utterances about not wanting to touch the January transfer window with a ten-foot pole, there are murmurings this morning that the Red Devils, along with Chelsea, are sniffing round the outrageously talented Eden Hazard.

The prospect of either side splashing out £25 million in the next fortnight seems highly fanciful, but then again this is a man who makes Joe Cole look good, so nothing should be entirely ruled out.

There’s also more speculation about the future of troublesome United prospect Ravel Morrison, whose rap sheet is so long and detailed that he wouldn’t look out of place as a minor character in The Wire/The Sopranos type affair.

Yesterday it was Newcastle, today it’s Barcelona who want to get their greedy mitts on an 18-year old believed to be most talented youth player at the Reds since Paul Scholes, but if the infamous Fergie hairdryers aren’t enough to keep him in line, he might go completely off the rails under Pep Guardiola’s softly, softly approach.

Not an Irish-related transfer story in sight this morning then, with the members of the fourth estate obviously too lazy to invent one after all the effort expounded on the Darron Gibson to Everton story over the last couple of days.

While there were few tears shed at the shot-happy midfielder’s departure round Old Trafford way, perhaps there was nobody as happy as the man in the video below, although we’re still struggling to comprehend what the hell a foreign news crew were doing in a nightclub inquiring of partygoers what they made of the Irishman’s move to the Toffees.

Or maybe, just maybe, they weren't talking about Gibson at all.
