Nintendo confirms Wii U will only be on a par with Xbox 360 and PS3 power
Responding to leaked reports on the technical specs of the upcoming Wii U console, Nintendo have said their hardware will be on a par - but no greater than - that of an Xbox 360 or PS3.

Responding to leaked reports on the technical specs of the upcoming Wii U console, Nintendo have said their hardware will be on a par with - but no greater than - that of an Xbox 360 or PS3.

The Japanese giants appear to be adopting a similar strategy to that of the Wii, which had similar hardware power to its predecessor, the GameCube. In the case of the Wii, the console was able to win over consumers with its game-changing motion control handheld - something Nintendo believes it can do once more with the Wii U's tablet-like controller.

“We do not focus on technology specs," Nintendo told Yahoo's Digital Trends. "We understand that people like to dissect graphics and processing power, but the experience of playing will always be more important than raw numbers.”

Earlier this week, a GamesIndustry.biz report citing two confidential developer sources claimed that the Wii U's power was inferior to those of a PS3 or Xbox 360, both of which have been on sale for over six years.

"No, it's not up to the same level as the PS3 or the 360," said one of the developers. "The graphics are just not as powerful." The second developer cited added: Yeah, that's true. It doesn't produce graphics as well as the PS3 or the 360.  There aren't as many shaders, it's not as capable.

"Sure, some things are better, mostly as a result of it being a more modern design. But overall the Wii U just can't quite keep up."

Consumers are expected to get their first glimpse at the launch titles for the Wii U and possibly even an announcement of its release date at this summer's E3 convention, typically one of the biggest dates in the video game calendar.
