One O'Sullivan has left Kerry, could another be on the way out?

Sean O’Sullivan left the Kerry squad this week after an all-too brief comeback and uncertainty also surrounds the future of his namesake Tom.

Kingdom bainisteoir Jack O’Connor has admitted he is in the dark about whether or not O’Sullivan will be prepared to soldier on for another year as the corner-back has yet to make his intentions for the coming season clear.

“Tom O’Sullivan hasn’t given any indication that he is coming back,” O’Connor is quoted as saying in The Star.

Such comments would suggest that O’Sullivan may be about to call it quits, but he has form when it comes to this sort of situation, having not returned until well into the National League campaign last year after O’Connor issued the Rathmore man with an ultimatum.

O’Sullivan turned 33 at the tail end of last year, but certainly showed no signs of slowing down last season in a Kerry defence where experience was very much the order of the day, with only Killian Young of the six backs in the All-Ireland Final on the right side of 30.

While the prospect of O’Sullivan donning a Kerry jersey again remains unclear, it’s pretty clear that Sean O’Sullivan won’t be back having stepped aside after an hour and a half of football on his return from a two-year absence.

O’Connor had felt that the wing-forward still had something to offer, a view obviously not shared by O’Sullivan, who announced his decision to step down again earlier in the week.

O’Connor has no hard feelings, however, saying: “Sean O’Sullivan came back with the intention of trying it out for a couple of games and seeing how it felt then.

“He wasn’t enjoying it and didn’t feel it was working out so that’s why he made his decision. I respect his decision and wish him well.

That’s one and potentially two O’Sullivans out of the picture for Kerry for the season ahead. If any more start to drop (i.e. Declan or Darran), then Kingdom followers will begin to get really worried.
