The 23rd installment in the Bond series has smashed worldwide box offices and grossed $1 billion in sales since its release.

The Daniel Craig starring movie has surpassed expectations and reached the elusive $1 billion mark yesterday.

Already having broken box office records as the highest grossing movie of all time in the UK, Skyfall became the latest contender to join the club of $1 billion movie earners such as Avatar, Titanic, The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers.

Skyfall joins the elite club of only 14 other movies to make the break through in sales worldwide, and it hasn’t even been released in China yet.

Skyfall has become the highest grossing movie in Sony Pictures history. It took in $4.6 million this weekend in North America alone. Overseas, it took in $10.3 million for a total of $1 billion worldwide.

The movie has proved the most successful in the longest running franchise in cinema history and is still on general release. Daniel Craig has played 007 three times and has signed on to play the role for two more movies.

It shows a new approach to previous Bond movies in the Ian Fleming franchise. After a near-death accident, Bond is seen to derail, drinking and hiding out, making his character seem more human than before. He returns to MI6 when M is threatened by an eerie villain named Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem).

The movie’s release coincided with the 50th anniversary of the James Bond series, which began with Dr.No in 1962.
