Henning Berg has just got the Blackburn job but whenever we think of the Norwegian, this moment of magic by Redondo comes to mind.
While Cristiano Ronaldo was just a child running around the street of Madeira back at the turn of the Millennium, Real Madrid had another gifted genius in their ranks. In fairness, they had loads of gifted geniuses but we always liked Redondo.
The Argentinian endured an injury-plagued career but when he was fit and healthy, he was truly world class.
He popped into our minds today on the back of the news that Henning Berg has chosen to take over the helm at Blackburn. The defender won a league title at the club back in 1995 before moving to Manchester United and winning a whole lot more.
But this moment, from an epic 3-2 Champions League quarter-final win by Real Madrid at Old Trafford in 2000 lives on in our minds. In a time before YouTube, you had to be watching the game to see any moments of magic and I vividly recall shouting ‘did you see that’ when this happened.
Now, thanks to YouTube, we can all relive it as many times as we like. It is still one of the best bits of defender beating we have ever seen, as was the spot-on pass to Raul.
And best of luck to Henning at Ewood Park, we hope he has a better time than he did that amazing night a dozen years ago.
