As we write this, a €700 million super-yacht is currently moored at Cobh and rather intriguingly, no-one knows who it belongs to. We have a hunch though...
Where did I leave my yacht this time?
Fat chance. Cobh residents are abuzz with speculation as to the identity of the owner of a €700 million super-yacht that is currently moored in Cobh.
It’s George Clooney, right? Sure wasn’t here there a few weeks ago too?
He may have been – nobody is quite sure about that one. However, despite his Ocean’s trilogy and Nespresso adverts, we reckon that the luxury Dutch-built ‘Air’ yacht might be out of the Cloonster’s price range.
So how much does it cost and where does all that money go?
The Air cost a reported €750,000 a week to hire and has seven staterooms for twelve guests, with six guest sites, a sundeck gym and pool, helicopter pad and a split-level owner’s suite.
Oh, and a 102-inch movie screen and toys such as dinghies, jet skis and kayaks in case you get bored. Did we mention that there’s an elevator to all decks too?
Oh, come on now, that’s just ridiculous! So where can I find this yacht and gawk at it for the rest of the day?
The yacht was moored in Cork City over the bank holiday weekend and moved to Cobh on Monday night, where it is expected to stay for the next few days.
For "security reasons", port authorities have received no details of the people aboard or their movements, while locals haven't spotted any recognisable celebrities swanning around the town. There is a high possibility that the owner of the yacht has been discovered, however.
Oooh… do tell.
According to an article from Boat International, the Air's - now renamed the 'Ice' - is owned by Russian billionaire Suleyman Kerimov.
Who-leyman Kerimov?
The name may not ring a bell but Kerimov is the 118th richest person in the world according to Forbes, with a net worth estimated at 6.02 billion. He’s also the owner of the Russian football side Anzhi Makhachkala, who have made waves in recent years with big-money signings such as manager Guus Hiddink, striker Samuel Eto’o and eh… paying €11 million for Chris Samba.
So what you’re saying is… Kerimov is looking for the new Roy Keane?
It’s possible. Or perhaps he’s after the oil that was discovered off the coast of Cork by Providence Resources back in March? Though we can’t confirm that it is Kerimov on the Air, Cobh Mayor Jim Quinlan sounds convinced.
“I have heard from a relatively reliable source that it is a Russian billionaire,” he told the Irish Daily Star.
“There is a heavy security presence around, and on, the boat, which suggests there is more than just crew aboard. Every body here is intrigued.”
So it’s 100 per cent Suleyman Kerimov then?
Sigh… sure, why not? Although if Bergen Norway is correct, the yacht was "previously owned" by Kerimov and is now registered in the Cayman Islands. Perhaps it's best to just pop down to Cobh yourself and ask the billionaire's no doubt super-friendly security staff - and possibly Chris Samba on lackey duties - and they'll be delighted to fill you in.
