Consider this your festival survival guide.

Over the next few months, Ireland will be taken over by festival fever, and we’re so ready it.

Your tickets are sorted, your tent has been sourced and your finest pair of wellies are ready to see you through whatever the Irish weather decides to throw at you. The final ingredient in the festival formula? A plan to stay safe and well throughout the weekend.

This festival season, your safety is paramount, so follow these tips below, and you’ll be in flying form throughout your next festival.

Stay hydrated

Alcohol and summer heatwaves are a dangerous combination, which is why it’s vital to stay hydrated throughout your next festival. Alcohol can quickly dehydrate your body, leading to headaches, dry skin and mouth and dizziness, and the heat can intensify these symptoms. Bring a a big water bottle and keep refilling it throughout the weekend.

Don’t drink on an empty stomach

Get a good hearty meal in before you start drinking alcohol. In addition to slowing down the absorption of alcohol, a good meal tops up the salt and minerals your body loses while drinking.

Listen to your body, know your limits

Always pace yourself, and if you start to feel dizzy or uncomfortable, listen to your body and stop. Be kind to yourself and say no when you’ve had enough.

Take breaks to recover

Make sure you recharge and refresh throughout the weekend. Factor in some down time to grab a smoothie or juice to replenish the minerals lost and a decent meal full of carbs and protein to help maintain your blood sugar levels.

Look out for each other and plan ahead

Know in advance how you’re getting home, and if you decide to leave early, tell your friends. Set a rallying point to meet up in case you get separated and bring a battery powered phone charger to keep your phone full of juice. Always look out for one another, don’t leave drinks unattended and never accept drinks from people you don’t know.
