Netflix cancels show but creator provides answers to its unresolved mysteries anyway

Stephen Porzio

The series had left many of its story threads open.

In October of this year, Netflix released the first season of The Midnight Club, a horror mystery series based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Pike.

Created by Leah Fong and Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Bly Manor), the show is set at Brightcliffe, a hospice for terminally ill young adults.

It follows eight patients (one of which was played by Irish actress Ruth Codd) who come together every night at midnight to tell each other stories and who make a pact that the next of them to die will give the group a sign from the beyond.

Despite solid reviews – it earned an 87% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes – and making its way into the Guinness Book of Records for the number of jump scares in its pilot, The Midnight Club was cancelled by Netflix in a surprise move earlier in the week.

Following the news, Mike Flanagan – who also created The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass for the streamer – took to Tumblr to clear up some of the show’s lingering mysteries and let fans know what would have happened to its characters.

In a blog post, he wrote: “I’m very disappointed that Netflix has decided not to pursue a second season of The Midnight Club.

“My biggest disappointment is that we left so many story threads open, holding them back for the hypothetical second season, which is always a gamble.

“So I’m writing this blog as our official second season, so you can know what might have been, learn the fates of your favorite characters, and know the answers to those dangling story threads from the first season.

“So for those of you who want to know what we were planning to do, here’s a look at what would have been season 2!”

Giving fans answers to the questions they might have had regarding the show’s entities like the Living Shadow, the Mirror Man and the Cataract Woman, the in-depth blog post can be found at this link.
