Whoopi Goldberg’s breakthrough role is among the movies on TV tonight

Hugh Carr

movies on tv 4 october

The film was nominated for a whopping 11 Academy Awards in 1986.

Spooky season is well and truly upon us.

The nights are getting shorter, the weather is getting colder, and you could almost hear a faint note in the distance creating a powerful sense of dread.

There really is one way to cure a case of the frights, and that’s staying inside with a great film on the TV.

Unless, of course, you’re watching a horror film. In that case, all of those frights are your own fault, I’m afraid.

Here’s JOE’s top picks for the best movies on the telly this Tuesday (4 October).

A View To A Kill – ITV4 – 7.20pm

Roger Moore’s final outing as Bond, taking on a young Christopher Walken.

Limitless – Great! Movies – 9pm

The science might make no sense, but this Bradley Cooper thriller is still a bit of fun.

Sex and the City 2 – Comedy Central – 9pm

2 Sex 2 City.

Eat Locals – Horror Channel – 10.55pm

Charlie Cox stars in this British vampire movie.

Cocktail – Channel 5 – 11pm

Incredibly cheesy, and incredibly 80s.

Jaws 3 – ITV4 – 11.10pm

Not in 3D. Whether that’s fortunate or unfortunate is up to you.

2001: A Space Odyssey – Turner Classic Movies – 11.15pm

Stanley Kubrick’s epic sci-fi that has influenced thousands of filmmakers.

The Color Purple – BBC Two – 11.15pm

Our top pick for tonight is a classic in Spielberg’s back catalogue, and also introduced the world to Whoopi Goldberg.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, the film is a powerful drama following the life of Celie Harris, and the life of African-American women in the early 20th century.

The film was a box office smash, topping end-of-year lists, with Goldberg’s performance cited as part of the movie’s success.

If you haven’t had a chance to see it yet, tonight is the night.

Animal Kingdom – Film4 – 11.20pm

A dramatic Aussie crime thriller inspired by a real crime family in Melbourne.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
