A Daily Mail cartoon depicting a gang of drunken DUP members has been blasted for its cluelessness.
On Monday, UK Prime Minister Theresa May
officially reached a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party to back her minority government.
Believed to be worth in the region of £1 billion, the 'confidence and supply' arrangement – it is not a formal coalition – will see the 10 DUP MPs in Westminster back the Conservative Party in key Commons votes, starting with the Queen's Speech later this week, and the Budget.
The deal has drawn some criticism and was the subject of
a satirical cartoon by MAC in the Daily Mail on Tuesday which, in turn, has received plenty of flak for being somewhat wide of the mark.
The cartoon depicts a host of drunken men and women on the floor of a pub called The Belfast Arms, having seemingly availed of an offer of ‘Free Guinness for Life’ displayed on the bar counter, behind which stand a shocked looking barman and barmaid.
Under the cartoon, a caption reads 'Theresa May took some persuading but eventually the DUP clinched the deal'.
Aside from what was described as ‘racial stereotyping’ by musician Billy Bragg on Twitter, others pointed out the anomaly in associating the DUP – a party with a reputation for being teetotal – with an image of public drunkenness.
