A key objective is to “ensure public safety by addressing anti-social behaviour”.
Gardaí have launched a special operation that will see them patrol Dart, Luas and eight InterCity rail routes to detect and prevent anti-social behaviour.
As part of Operation Twin Tracks, two days of operation will take place on 3 June and 27 July in partnership with Irish Rail, which operates Dart and InterCity services, and Transdev Ireland, which operates the Luas.
The eight intercity routes are the Mayo Division; the Galway Division; the Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim Division; Kildare; the Wicklow and Wexford Division, the Limerick and Tipperary Divisions; and the Cork City, North and West Divisions.
The latter includes two routes, one incorporating the Charleville, Mallow, Banteer, Millstreet and Rathmore stations and the other incorporating the Cork City, Glounthane, Cobh and Midleton stations.
A Garda spokesperson said that the two primary elements of the operation are community engagement and rail safety.
They said that these will be achieved through a high level of Garda visibility on the rail networks and at train stations nationwide, as well as the delivery of crime prevention advice.
“High visibility patrolling will operate between the hours of 3pm and 11pm on each day within the Dublin Region (Connolly and Heuston Stations) and nationwide on eight intercity routes whilst local Crime Prevention Officers and Community Policing Gardaí will deliver crime prevention advice at community engagement/crime prevention stands at a number of stations from 3pm to 8pm,” a statement reads.
According to Gardaí, the key objectives of the operation are:
- Preventing crime and bringing criminals to justice through the detection and investigating of crime
- To ensure public safety by addressing anti-social behaviour
- To support Irish Rail and Transdev Ireland personnel in tackling these issues and improving rail safety
- Protecting life and property and vindicating the human rights of each individual
- To engage with the public and provide crime prevention advice
