Gardaí have warned against giving quad bikes and scramblers as gifts.

An Garda Síochána has once again warned the public of the dangers associated with children and young teenagers being gifted quad bikes and scramblers this Christmas.

Gardaí said people have been killed and seriously injured by the vehicles in recent years, and that most of these incidents involve someone under the age of 18.

Chief Superintendent Paul Cleary of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau stated: “Members of An Garda Síochána do not want to be delivering devastating news to another family this Christmas so our message is clear; children and young teenagers should not be driving these vehicles in public, or without the necessary licence, insurance, safety equipment and supervision.”

Gardaí have advised they will have a visible presence in highlighted locations where scramblers are known to be driven and will be enforcing the Public Order Act and the Road Traffic Act.

One man died in a quad bike crash in Donegal earlier this year, and last year one man suffered head injuries after being hit by a quad bike in Dublin.
