Irish teacher reportedly stabbed at Spanish school by 13-year-old pupil

An Irish teacher in Spain is reported to have been stabbed at a school by a 13-year-old pupil.

The incident is said to have occurred in the city of Murcia on Wednesday morning (16 February).

Sources told the local newspaper La Verdad that the teacher was stabbed three times during a class.

This was when he had his back to his students while at a chalkboard.

La Verdad reports that the unnamed teacher was of Irish nationality and taught technology and English classes at the school.

The paper said he was taken to hospital for his injuries which are not described as serious.

An investigation led by Spain’s National Police is underway.

In a statement to JOE, the Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the reports and that it “stands ready to provide consular assistance”.
