Man dies after 4.50am car crash in Roscommon

Very sad news from Roscommon.

A man in his 70s has died after his car struck a wall at Ballyforan, Roscommon, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

There were no other vehicles involved in the incident.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána confirmed that the collision took place at around 4.50am on Tuesday morning.

Gardaí attended the scene, and the driver, a man in his 70s, was taken to Roscommon University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A female passenger of the car was uninjured.

Gardaí have said that a  post mortem is due to take place later today.

At time of writing on Tuesday morning, the road remains closed in order to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Local diversions have been put in place.
