With two separate status yellow weather warnings already in place as of Tuesday evening, Met Éireann has issued a new snow/ice warning for three counties.

This warning, also status yellow, affects DonegalLeitrim and Sligo and is valid from Wednesday morning (26 February) at 9am until midday on Thursday.

According to Met Éireann, showers of hail, sleet and snow will continue throughout Wednesday and early Thursday, leading to icy patches.

Snow accumulations are also expected over high ground.

The two previously issued warnings are set to expire at different times.

The first, in effect since 6am on Tuesday, is a snow/ice warning for the entire country and will remain in place until 9am on Wednesday.

In this instance, wintry showers – mainly of hail and sleet – will become increasingly widespread, leading to icy patches and build-up of snow.

The other status yellow warning currently in place as of Tuesday concerns strong winds in ClareCork and Kerry and is valid until 11pm. Northwest winds are expected to reach mean speeds of 50 to 60 kilometres per hour with gusts of 90 to 100 kilometres per hour.

Strongest gusts in this case are associated with showers.

While temperatures for this time of year have been slightly above average lately, it is expected that these will fall to 2 or 3 degrees below the mean through Tuesday and the coming days.
