“I’m absolutely devastated by what took place last night.”

Travis Scott has said that he is “absolutely devastated” after at least eight people died and hundreds more were injured in a crowd surge during his performance at the Astroworld festival in Houston, Texas.

During his set, at the festival which he runs, some of the 50,000 strong crowd compressed towards the front of the stage, causing injuries and panic.

This led to a “mass casualty incident“, with 11 people taken to hospital with cardiac arrests and hundreds more treated for injuries at the festival.

In a statement on Twitter, the rapper said he was “absolutely devastated by what took place last night” and that his “prayers go out to the families and all those impacted.”

He added that Houston Police Department has his “total support as they continue to look into the tragic loss of life.”

Scott finished by writing his thanks to the emergency services at the event for their “immediate response and support.”

The rapper stopped his performance several times to alert security and first aid staff to people that appeared to be struggling in the crowd.

The second day of the festival, which was due to feature acts such as Tame Impala and 21 Savage, has been cancelled because of the events of Friday night.
