Rest in peace, Liffey whale.

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group have confirmed that the whale spotted in the River Liffey earlier this week has died.

Sadly, the creature was seen lying dead on Thursday morning alongside the Ulysses ferry in Dublin Port.

In a statement published on Thursday, the IWDG said: “Great shame, but was always the most likely prognosis.”

IWDG had confirmed that the whale was a juvenile fin whale.

According to the group, “Fin are occasionally recorded in the Irish Sea but most currently are off the south coast feeding on seasonally abundant herring and sprat.” IWDG had speculated earlier in the week that for the whale to be in the Liffey was a sign that it was either sick or disoriented.

The whale is being towed out to sea by Dublin Port to clear the shipping lanes.
