Journey times on Irish trains are set to drop by up to 20 minutes on some journeys thanks to new changes on train speed limits.

Iarnrod Éireann are hoping that faster trains will see more customers leaving their cars at home and opting for the train instead. Thanks to improvements over the past number of months on certain sections of track will allow trains to travel at speeds up to 160km/h or 100mph in old money.

Dublin to Cork will see travel times falling to two hours and thirty minutes, which will see passengers saving roughly 20 minutes. Around 10 minutes has also been knocked off the Dublin to Waterford line, which takes up to two hours 25 minutes, and Dublin to Galway will now take 15 minutes less usual.

“While rail journey times remain competitive, there is no doubt that the motorway investment has provided us with a competitive challenge,” a spokesman said.

“It is hoped these changes will attract more people to services which will help make the case for further improvements.”
