Prisoner (30s) dies after assault in Wheatfield Prison

A man in his late 30s has died following a fatal assault in a jail cell shortly before 10pm.

Emergency services were called but the man was later pronounced dead.

An investigation will review whether the man may have been stabbed.

The Irish Prison Service said all deaths in custody are investigated by the IPS, the Inspector of Prisons and gardaí.

In a statement, it said: "The Irish Prison Service wish to express our condolences to the deceased's family and friends.

"Next of kin have been informed."
