Eagle-eyed viewers did well to spot it.
A handful of very attentive Gavin and Stacey fans were the only ones to spot a very well-hidden football related gag in last night’s finale.
The emotional farewell to the much-loved sitcom, which saw characters Smithy and Nessa finally get their happy ending, drew an average audience of 12.3 million – according to overnight figures in the UK.
It surpassed the show’s 2019 Christmas special, which had an overnight audience of 11.6 million, by more than half a million viewers.
Fans had been eagerly anticipating the final instalment of the show for five years after the last special ended on a dramatic cliffhanger when Nessa got down on one knee to confess her love for Smithy.
Not only did we get the answer to that question, but we also learned of the revelation that Nessa’s ex – Dave of Dave’s Coaches fame – has found love with none other than Gwen.
While many might have guessed the return of Dave before he made his dramatic appearance just short of an hour in to last night’s episode, few spotted the Spurs-themed easter egg at Smithy’s stag.
During one scene, James Corden’s character is on his own stag do and all his brilliantly-nicknamed pals and family – including Budgie, Chinese Alan and Dirtbox – whip off their jackets to reveal a host of West Ham football shirts with “Smithy 16” on the back.
Smithy’s best pal and best man Gavin – played by Mathew Horne – also does so but fans of the show will be aware that one of the titular characters is actually a Tottenham fan, which is where the gag comes in.
A close-up of Gavin’s shirt showed a Tottenham sticker plastered over the Hammers’ badge as a show of allegiance to his own club.
Many Spurs fans will have spotted the sticker on the badge but for anyone who didn’t then have a wind back and see if you can pick it out.
It was a nice nod to one of the show’s many, many recurring themes.
