Tributes have been paid to the ‘wonderful and passionate actor’
Actor Brian McCardie has passed away at the age of 59, his wife has announced.
The Scot was best known for his role as crime boss John Thomas ‘Tommy’ Hunter in the hit BBC police drama Line of Duty, and also starred as Sir Marcus MacRannoch in an episode of Outlander.
His wife Sarah announced the news in an emotional post on social media.
She wrote on X: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian James McCardie, beloved son, brother, uncle and dear friend to so many.
“Brian passed away suddenly at home on Sunday 28th April. A wonderful and passionate actor on stage and screen, Brian loved his work and touched many lives, and is gone much too soon. We love him and will miss him greatly; please remember Brian in your thoughts.
“Funeral arrangements will be announced in the days ahead.” Producer Peter Broughan added: “Shocked to hear that. Great memories of working with him on Rob Roy. Requiescat in pace.”
Most recently, McCardie had appeared alongside Sean Bean in the BBC drama Time, and he had been involved in filming for the upcoming Outlander prequel Blood of My Blood.
Along with his television appearances, he also starred in a number of films, including Rob Roy, Filth and The Damned United, where he played legendary Scottish footballer Dave Mackay.
Paying tribute to the late actor, author Paul Larkin tweeted: “Shocked and devastated to learn of the passing of Brian McCardie. Brian was a brilliant friend and we had many discussions about mental health issues where he was a fantastic help to me.
“As well as that; he was a phenomenal actor. Sleep tight Brother.”
Film and TV director Jon Baird wrote: “Devastated to hear about Brian McCardie. He was one of the funniest actors I ever worked with. Rest well Dougie Gillman. Same Rules Apply!”
Scottish parliament member Angus Robertson said it was “tremendously sad news,” and described him as a “terrific actor and lovely guy.”
Meanwhile, BAFTA Scotland said it was “deeply saddened” to hear of McCardie’s passing.
