It's only the second week of the season so it might be a little futile to speak of absolute truths we have learned from the weekend's football, but here's our "5 Things" from this weekend...
Eden Hazard is kind of good...
Chelsea may have shelled out the big bucks, €40million to be precise, on the 21-year old Belgian but it seems to be paying dividends.
Hazard has played three games so far bagging his first goal from the spot against Newcastle at the weekend and laying on 4 assists for his teammates.
With at least a decade of him playing at the top of his game left, the big outlay is now looking like a shrewd investment.
Chelsea sit top of the Premier League at the moment after 3 games and though it’s early doors yet we may have to get used to it.
While Chelsea’s defence still looks creaky, their attack is beginning to shape into something beautiful with Fernando Torres also returning to form and scoring a peach of a second goal this past Saturday evening.
We have yet to see Chelsea’s other expensive new boys Marin and Oscar this season, but it looks like Chelsea are finally beginning to take shape as the type of attacking, attractive force that Roman Abramovich has wanted since he bought Chelsea in 2003.
Hazard may be the catalyst of that as we saw at the weekend.
A good week for the new boys
Van Persie, Kagawa and Michu all got on the scoresheet this weekend.
Van Persie curled a magnificent shot into the back of Schwarzer’s net, while Kagawa’s effort and ingenuity was rewarded as he also scored his first Premier League goal for Man United as they ran out 3-2 winners over Fulham.
Michu scored his third goal in 2 games for Swansea and the Spaniard already looks to be a bargain for Michael Laudrup’s free-flowing Swans.
With Hazard also in top form it just goes to show there’s still some value in splashing the cash on some well chosen players to add new impetus to a side.
Comeback Duff we still need you...
He may the wrong side of thirty but we don’t think we’ve seen Damien Duff as fit as this in a long time.
The former Ireland winger announced on Friday that he felt it was time for newer players to come through and called a time on his international career. The very next day he scored a clever goal from a freekick to open Fulham’s scoring against Man United. It was his second goal in two games for the Cottagers and Martin Jol’s side is playing some attractive stuff with Duff at the centre of it.
Duffer seems to be coming in a little more central to be creative for Fulham, it’s sad because that’s a role he could still play effectively for Ireland.
Swanning about...
With the loss of Joe Allen and former boss Brendan Rodgers to Liverpool many thought Swansea were in for trouble, particularly when the appointed Michael Laudrup as boss, many saying he has a patchy record.
They probably should have looked a little closer at the great Dane’s record, he was superb at Getafe, a club that is quite similar to Swansea and then found things a little more difficult at the unstable larger clubs of Spartak Moscow and Real Mallorca.
Swansea beat West Ham 3-0 at the weekend playing a superb brand of one-touch football, it looks like the Welsh side might not only continue on from where they left off last season, they may improve under Laudrup’s stewardship.
Man City slow start
The champions may have four points but they have done it playing pretty poorly.
Liverpool were pretty dominant at the weekend and can count themselves unlucky not to have picked up a win yesterday, Martin Skrtel’s backpass gifting City a fortuitous point.
City performed a little toothlessly as they did the week before against Premier League new boys Southampton.
David Silva is still looking to find form, as are a lot of City’s midfielders until they do City might be vulnerable.
