Ireland midfielder Keith Andrews has dropped out of the Premier League by leaving Blackburn Rovers for a loan spell at Ipswich Town – and then aimed what is often described as “a parting shot” at his former club.
Andrews struggled for form and fitness last season, when he made just five appearances for the Ewood Park club.
He returned to action at international level in the end-of-season fixtures, impressing in Giovanni Trapattoni’s midfield in his first Ireland appearances since the World Cup play-off defeat to France two years ago.
You’d have to think his hopes of nailing down a regular starting place for the run-in to the Euro 2012 qualification programme have receded following his decision to drop down a division in search of first-team football – but conversely, Andrews believes the move will improve his chances of featuring for Ireland.
The Dubliner, who turns 31 next month, said, “I didn't want to be in an out of the team this year and I need to be playing football so I can feature for my country.
“I don't see this as a step down at all. I see myself coming here and hopefully making a good impression.”
He also aimed a dig at Blackburn for the way he’s been treated in recent times. “I've always conducted myself very well so it's refreshing to come to a football club where you're appreciated,” he said. “I've gone in there from League Two so it's a massive jump and I've conducted myself right from the second I walked in to the club until the second I left.”
