In our afternoon round-up of some global football stories, we bring you the news that Benjani - of Portsmouth and Man. City subs bench fame - is wanted in South Africa, a Serbian side score a goal that was practiced many times on the training pitch while Palermo's Fabrizio Miccoli scores a wonder goal at the weekend.
The chase for Benjani
For those of you who thought that you would never hear the words ‘chase’ and ‘Benjani’ in the same sentence, then you are clearly not keeping up with your South African football. The 34 year-old (well that’s what we are told, so until we see the birth cert we’re willing to go with it) is being linked with Sun Sport United having been without a club since being released from Portsmouth last year. You read that right, the striker is apparently in demand.
The South African side have scored just four goals in their opening six games and coach Gavin Hunt told Kick Off that the striker could be the man to solve their problems.
“We are going to try to sign him today, we have to try something. I think he is a general all-round player that can help us do a little better up front,” he said.
While Portsmouth fans hold Benjani in high regard, Man. City, Sunderland and Blackburn fans may have a different view. He reportedly was on £50,000 a week at Eastlands, so considering he found the net just four times in two years there, they were pretty expensive goals, even by Sheikh Mansour’s standards.
Training ground practice pays off
There is nothing quite as satisfying as when a training ground move comes off in a game. For that very reason the Serbian U-17 international side and management will be more than pleased with their 4-0 victory over Moldova.
While that in itself was not an extraordinary feat, one of goals really caught the eye. A training ground move was perfectly planned and executed as a Serbian corner kick was ran over by three players before being slotted into the bottom corner.
We imagine that relief was just as much part of the celebration as any mix-up would have left the players looking very silly indeed.
Miccoli on the ball
We brought you a wonder strike from Russia at the weekend, but Serie A also bore witness to spectacular strike, this one from Palermo’s Fabrizio Miccoli. The Italian international scored a hat-trick as they thrashed Chievo 4-1, but it was his volley from close to the half-way line which took all the headlines.
You just have got to love Italian commentators. We think he enjoyed that one.
