The odds on Longford beating Dublin tonight were about as long as Celtic qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Champions League, which made an unlikely victory all the more sweet for the underdogs.
Not many gave Longford under-21s a hope of beating Dublin in Parnell Park this evening; after all, this was a Dublin side who won the All-Ireland under-21 title last year and who scored 4-27 in a 37-point victory over Carlow in the first round.
Longford hadn’t read the script, however, and ran out 1-6 – 1-5 winners, with a second-half goal from Robbie Smyth proving crucial in what was a magnificent victory for Eugene McCormack’s side.
The picture at the top of the page shows what it meant to the goalscorer, while as you can see below, Rory O’Connor and Cillian Lynn looked pretty chuffed as well.

If the jokes doing the rounds on Twitter tonight are to be believed, the campaign to split Longford, and not Dublin, in two in GAA circles has already started in earnest.
