Everyone is so used to Mayo losing to Kerry that the lads in charge of the fixture list at Croke Park pencilled the Kingdom into the final despite Mayo’s late win.
You could say Mayo have a reputation for being unlucky losers. Always one of the classiest teams in the country, their collection of near misses, especially against Kerry, would break the hardest of hearts.
Just last summer, Kerry beat Mayo in the All-Ireland semi-final, continuing the cycle of misery for the Connacht side. But yesterday, James Horan’s men battled to a heroic win over their old foes. It took extra time, and a wonder goal by Colm Boyle, to finally beat Kerry but beat them they did and Mayo qualified for the League final, where Cork, a team they beat last year, wait for them.
But the lads at HQ must have fallen asleep before the end of the Mayo/Kerry game and when they woke up, Cork and Down were on the pitch. Unsure what to do, the lads in charge of the fixtures must have assumed that Kerry, as always, found a way past Mayo and stuck them in the final.
Up until the early evening, as you can see above, the League final was displayed as Kerry v Cork. It has now been changed but if Mayo needed any further motivation, this will surely help.
Hat-tip to @ruanejos for spotting and posting it on Twitter.
