Forget about ‘The Hills of Donegal’, followers of Jim McGuinness’ men should be singing this little ditty to cheer on their lads in the All-Ireland semi-final.
Bar a couple of notable exceptions – Wexford’s 'Dancing at the Crossroads' being a particular one – GAA songs are hugely forgettable, often cringeworthy affairs and are designed to be sang on a select few occasions and gladly put away until your county is on the rise again.
If enough word spreads about this Jim McGuinness tribute video, however, legions of Donegal fans might have a new anthem to sing for generations to come, or at least for as long as the current Bainisteoir remains in place.
Titled ‘Jimmy’s winning matches’, the video features Rory and the Island and a colleague known only as Jimmy from Senegal paying a reggae-infused tribute to the Donegal manager from the exotic surroundings of Lanzarote.
We can’t say much for Jimmy’s drumming ability, but he certainly rocks a Donegal jersey and he shouts ‘Up Donegal’ as enthusiastically as anyone else from the county will be in Croke Park when they take on Cork in a few weeks time.
And if that’s not enough, his encyclopaedic knowledge of the geography of fellow semi-finalists Dublin, Cork and Mayo is surely better than the average Irish person, certainly the far from well travelled hacks in the JOE office anyway.
Check out the song for yourself in the video above, and keep your eyes peeled for a slightly NSFW glance at a woman in the top left corner of the screen around the 1:30 mark.
A big hat-tip to both Sean O’Neill and Kevin Johnson for sending this little beauty our way.
