Mrs. Brown's Boys may be one of the most popular shows to come out of Ireland in recent years, but it certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea.
Creator and star of Mrs. Brown’s Boys, Brendan O’Carroll has hit back at critics of the show, saying he doesn’t "give a f**k" if they’re insulted.
O’Carroll created the sitcom and plays the titular Mrs. Brown in the show. Since it first aired in 2011, the show has become one of the most divisive comedies of recent years, building up a loyal fan base along with an equally passionate group of people who can’t stand it.
The Irish star’s declaration comes ahead of the sitcom’s stage tour later this summer, which starts in Glasgow on August 25th.
O’Carroll warned that he won’t be holding back, and compared his shows to what fans may expect from going to see a Ricky Gervais standup show, where fans "know what you’re going to get".
He told the Daily Star: "I don’t deliberately try to be outrageous. But when someone says they feel insulted, I think, ‘I don’t give a f*** if you’re insulted’. I don’t care."
The comedian continued: "When you go to see Ricky Gervais on stage, you know what you’re going to get.
"So don’t be surprised by what he says things… of course, he’s going to say those things. That’s what he does.
"That’s what comedians are supposed to do. They’re supposed to ride along the edge."
He also explained that by dressing up as his Mrs. Brown alter-ego, he’s able to say and do more outrageous things than if he was just being himself on stage, admitting "she gets away with stuff that I’d never f***ing get away with".
He explained: "She’s 70 and when you get to that age, you don’t give a s***. You don’t worry about what people think of you.
"You’ve been there and bought the T-shirt… or in her case bought the bra. That’s her attitude. I love getting to do that."
The last full series of Mrs Brown’s Boys aired in 2013 but since then it has returned for a number of festive specials.
Mrs. Brown’s Boys first aired in 2011 and is set to return to our screens this year for a mini-series as part of belated 10th-anniversary celebrations.
