Back to prison we go.
Hit thriller series Prison Break is set to return to the screens, according to reports.
Well, at least kind of.
The original iteration of Prison Break ran for four seasons between 2005 and 2009, before being revived for a fifth in 2017.
For anyone who missed the show, it centred around two brothers, Lincoln (Dominic Purcell) and Michael (Wentworth Miller).
After Lincoln is jailed for a crime he didn’t commit and put on death row, Michael gets himself locked up next to his sibling – having already hatched an elaborate escape plan which is etched into his body in a series of obscure tattoos.
However, once out of jail, the brothers’ problems intensify.
Prison Break is officially getting a reboot
According to multiple US entertainment news outlets, Hulu is in early development on a new series based on Prison Break from Mayans M.C. co-creator Elgin James.
That said, the reboot is not expected to follow Lincoln and Michael, though it will be set in the same world as them.
Described by Deadline as “a new chapter”, the creator of the original Prison Break, Paul Scheuring, is on board for the spin-off as an executive producer.
Prison Break picked up a Golden Globe for Best Television Series Drama in its debut season, though many agree, the show got worse as it went on.
In a now-deleted Instagram post, the original series’ star Wentworth Miller, who is gay, previously said he did not want to return to the role of Michael Scofield.
“I’m out. Of PB. Officially,” the actor wrote. “Not [because] of static on social media (although that has centered the issue). I just don’t want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told).”
“No more Michael. If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons… I understand this is disappointing. I’m sorry.”
Responding to the post, Miller’s onscreen brother Dominic Purcell voiced his support for his co-star’s decision, writing: “Glad you have made this decision for your health and your truth.”
