Ant and Dec recruited the help of an iconic British boyband to close the show, but people at home weren’t having it.

If you stayed in to avoid the heavy winds last night, you might have fancied tuning in to the weekend TV staple that is Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.

A popular feature of the programme are the ‘End of the Show’ shows which typically include a surprise performance from a pop superstar or mainstream band.

Last night’s edition of the long-running programme, which will officially be ending its reign next weekend with a much-anticipated season finale, opened with Take That performing their hit song ‘Shine’.

The remaining members of the 90’s pop group, Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald were on the good side of viewers after the nostalgic performance of their number one single from 2007.

However, when they returned to the stage to perform their new track You and Me, viewers were left “disappointed” as a regular key element was left out of the weekly extravaganza.

Most weeks, Ant and Dec grab a pair of microphones and partake in the song alongside the musical performer, but that wasn’t the case last night.

Viewers took to Twitter to voice their dissatisfaction at what will turn out to be the penultimate episode of the show ever.

One user wrote: “Why didn’t ant and dec Partake in the song like they have every other week #SaturdayNightTakeAway.”

Another commented: “Super disappointed by that end of the show, show. Far better when they are properly part of the act and its full of energy.”

Another put their disappointment in plain and simple terms: “Worst end of the show show ever!”

The Geordie pair previously opened up about why they decided to rest the show following this upcoming series.

Ant told Fault magazine the reason they both decided to take a break: “Part of the reason we’re pausing Takeaway is we need a break ourselves, and we need to spend some time with our family. We’ve both got children that we need to spend time with for a little bit.

“We need time to think and, and time to step back and look at the bigger picture and just see where we are now,” he added.

“Like I say, we’re turning 49, and what do we want to do next? What’s the next phase of our career?

“And we’ve got lots of ideas and lots of offers on the table, lots of options of things we can do. But it’s working on what we do next and where the next chapter begins.

“So that’s what we’re gonna do when SNT is out of the way. We’ll sit down, take a bit of time, and re-evaluate everything.”

Luckily for Ant and Dec, some fans enjoyed last night’s show. One shared on social media: “Loved the performance at the end of the show show,” as another added: “That was the best end of the show show in awhile and Take That’s new song sounds great.”

The show returns to ITV1 next Saturday evening from 7pm.
