A courageous move by Father Martin Dolan.

A courageous move by Father Martin Dolan.

The parishioners at the Church of St Nicholas of Myra in Dublin gave their priest a standing ovation during Mass last Saturday.

The reason: because Father Martin Dolan came out as gay during the service on Francis Street.

Father Dolan was calling on his parishioners to vote for same-sex marriage in the upcoming referendum this Spring before he made the revelation.

Father Dolan, who has been at the church for 15 years, came out as gay and the people in the church rose to their feet to gave him a warm round of applause.

The referendum on same sex marriage will take place at the end of May 2015.
