Can anyone else believe that everyone's favourite Cheers barman is just seven years off 60?

We’re not sure we’ve ever seen a bad Woody Harrelson film.

OK, scratch that, besides Indecent Proposal we’re not sure we’ve ever seen a bad Woody Harrelson film, and as the hemp-loving screen veteran turns 53 we’re paying tribute with our favourite performances from the man himself.

Roy Munson (Kingpin)

Harrelson’s Roy Munson is the reprehensible grifter that you can’t help but root for. Harrelson’s charisma saw this one through, and it’s still just as funny as it was when it was released in 1996.

Witness the things one man will do to avoid paying his rent…

Larry Flynt (The People vs. Larry Flynt)

Before this, the closest Harrelson had come to an award were three nominations for an MTV Award for Best Kiss. Not so with this, with the then 35-year-old blowing everyone else off screen and earning himself an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the titular Hustler founder.

Haymitch Abernathy (The Hunger Games)

It may ultimately be a load of populist fluff, but The Hunger Games is not without its moments and most of them are provided by Harrelson’s Haymitch, who mixes his usual mischief with a dose of drunken melancholia.

Ultimately it’s only a supporting role but anything that brings the great man to a wider, younger audience is fine by us.

Woody Boyd (Cheers)

Harrelson at his most lovable, his dopey Woody always just about staying on the right side of simple and offsetting the more cynical and worldweary Ted Danson perfectly.

Martin Hart (True Detective)

One of the more memorable small screen double-acts we’ve ever seen, Harrelson’s Martin Hart arguably has even more hidden depths than Matthew McConaughey’s showier Rust Cohle.

It’s a series that stays with you, mainly down to the two lead performances.
