Getting married soon? Start saving.

A wedding day is one of the most important days in anyone’s life and as any of you who have attended one in Ireland will know, there’s usually no expense spared when it comes to the big day.

Just how expensive weddings are these days was revealed in the results of a weddingsonline survey released today, with Irish people spending an average of €22,531 on the total cost of their wedding, including the honeymoon.

The results were based on the responses of 2,000 people surveyed over the last month, with the figure representing an increase of 6% from last year.

In an effort to meet the costs of the wedding, it was revealed that 28% of people take out a loan while 22% share the costs with their parents.

The average price per head of an Irish wedding is €61, while 45% of people spend over €60 per guest.

With all the costs involved, it is hardly a surprise to learn that 77% of people prefer cash as a wedding gift, especially as approximately two in five couples (38%) go over budget on their wedding.

Amongst the other findings in the survey, it was revealed that Saturday remains the most popular day to get married (42%), people wait an average of 18 months between their engagement and their wedding and that 90% of couples chose to honeymoon abroad – USA, Mexico and the Maldives being the most popular destinations.

Hope all of that didn’t put you off popping the question fellas.
