Arsenal and Chelsea enjoyed wins on matchday two of the Champions League, while Aiden McGeady starred in a Spartak Moscow victory.

Partizan Belgrade 1-3 Arsenal

Andrei Arshavin, Marouane Chamakh and Sebastien Squillaci were on the scoresheet as Arsenal defeated Partizan Belgrade in Group H.

Arshavin opened the scoring after fifteen minutes with a confident finish after being set up by a lovely flick from young midfielder Jack Wilshere.

Partizan levelled just after the half hour mark when Cleo scored from the penalty spot after a silly handball in the box by Denilson.

The Gunners regained the lead after 71 minutes when Marouane Chamakh headed home from close range after his initial effort rebounded off the crossbar.

Sebastien Squillaci made the game safe eight minutes from time when he headed in Samir Nasri’s corner, while there was still time for Lukasz Fabianski to save a penalty from Cleo before the finish.

Chelsea 2-0 Marseille

Chelsea bounced back from their defeat to Manchester City at the weekend with a comfortable victory over Marseille at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues had the game as good as won by the half hour mark thanks to goals from John Terry and Nicolas Anelka.

Terry flicked in Gael Kakuta’s corner after seven minutes and Anelka doubled Chelsea’s lead in the 28th minute from the penalty spot after Stephane M’bia was harshly adjudged to have handled in the penalty area.

The visitors were far better after the break but Carlo Ancelotti’s men held on and retained the top spot in Group F with a 100% record.

Spartak Moscow 3-0 MSK Zilina

Irish international Aiden McGeady played a starring role as Spartak Moscow eased to victory over MSK Zilina in Group F.

The 24-year old’s pace and trickery caused the Slovakian side no end of problems as two goals from Brazilian striker Ari and a strike from Ibson helped Spartak to a comfortable victory.

The Russian side are level with Chelsea at the top of the group and trail the Premier League champions on goal difference.
