The Irish people are being told to batten down the hatches as a Hurricane Thomas heads for our coast.

According to forecasters, Hurricane Thomas is expected to make landfall, bringing with it high tides and winds of up to 100kmh.

Councils in Dublin, Galway and other coastal areas have been put on flood alert with the hurricane due to hit on Sunday. Dublin City Council has ordered the closure of car parks at Clontarf and Sandymount as a precautionary measure.

"There are concerns these high winds coupled with high tides could lead to flooding," a Met Eireann spokesman told the Irish Independent.

He continued, "Although the hurricane will be significantly weaker by the time it hits us, we are predicting winds of up to 100kmh and very high waves which always set alarm bells ringing."
