7 times modernised cars blew our minds

JOE

Brought to you by the all new Toyota C-HR 5 Door C-SUV.

Wouldn’t mind cruising around town in one of these…

Back in the day when you were doing laps of the town in your clapped-out jalopy, your mind may have drifted to thoughts of the future.

Well, it would seem the future is fast approaching with the imminent release of Toyota C-HR 5 Door C-SUV.

Inspired by its sleek profile, muscular styling and elevated cabin position we’ve compiled a list of our favourite modernised cars.

1. MINORITY REPORT

Let’s kick off the list by jumping into the not too distant world of 2054.

According to the futurologists who advised Steven Spielberg on his sci-fi thriller, by the time we’re drawing our pension we’ll be going to the post office in self-driven cars attached to magnetic tracks of road.

These roads will be vertical as well as horizontal, but don’t worry, they’ll come with a rotating passenger pod to avoid spillage and the general discomfort of suddenly being upside down.

2. THE HOMER

“Powerful like a gorilla, yet soft and yielding like a Nerf ball…”

Homer Simpson has held many jobs he’s completely unqualified for throughout his career including astronaut, nuclear safety inspector and garbage commissioner.

One of Homer’s most famous blunders was when his half-brother Herb allowed him to design and build the car of his dreams.

Unfortunately for Herb though, Homer’s dreams involve bubble domes and several horns that play ‘La Cucaracha’.

The “badly-designed and hideously styled monstrosity” ends up bankrupting poor Herb, but was Homer merely a man ahead of his time?

Have a look at the video below where a non-animated person built their own version of Homer’s vision.

3. KITT

Ask people today who was the star of Knight Rider and they might give the name of Mr. 1980s himself, David Hasselhoff.

But the real star of the show wasn’t Hasselhoff’s titular Michael Knight, but rather his four wheeled buddy, KITT (Knight Industries Three Thousand).

As sentient talking cars go, KITT had a lot of personality and heart.

Not only was he skilled at frequently bailing Michael Knight out of trouble, he was also pretty reliable for the dry remark or cutting comment. Forget dogs, KITT from Knight Rider was man’s best friend.

4. BLADE RUNNER

The “Spinners” in Blade Runner can drive on the ground or take off vertically, hover and cruise using jet propulsion much like Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL).

This technology is strictly used by police to keep the peace and by rich people to keep… rich people separate from non-rich people.

5. ECTO-1

In terms of design and ability the ECTO-1 mightn’t be the most dynamic car on this list.

The preferred mode of transport for the Ghostbusters can’t fly or climb walls.

It’s got a mess of wires and old junk on the roof next to its siren that look like they’re holding on for dear life with every sharp turn the Ghostbusters take. (According to writer/star Dan Ackroyd the car had an annoying habit of breaking down and once came to a complete halt on the Brooklyn Bridge).

However, it is capable of housing ghostbusting equipment and that’s a good enough reason for it to be on this list.

6. THE BATMOBILE

Since Batman first appeared in Detective Comics back in 1939, one fact above all others has been undeniable about the caped crusader – he’s got an insanely cool car.

Whether your first exposure to the Batmobile was in the camp 1960s Adam West incarnation or the dramatic Michael Keaton films of the late 1980s, you wanted that car.

Every generation has their own Batmobile, but the vehicle itself has a few constants. It’s got a jet engine which is handy if you’re in a hurry or fancy barbecuing some bad guys.

It can withstand nearly any blast, hop between buildings and – most importantly of all – is impervious to speed cameras.

7. THE DELOREAN

The ultimate in time travelling comfort, the Antrim-built Delorean was the perfect vehicle for Doc Brown and Marty’s adventure back to the future.

The time travelling device in the original script was a fridge, but executive producer Steven Spielberg was worried that impressionable children would copy the film and get stuck inside.

Director Robert Zemeckis chose the DeLorean because it looked like an alien spaceship. The car’s gull-wing doors added an extra sci-fi element and a classic film icon was born.

The Toyota C-HR 5 Door C-SUV; a game-changing car for today.
